When is the best time to get a flu shot?

As summer ends and fall starts up, flu season is on the minds of many people looking to avoid getting sick as the weather gets colder.

You might be wondering when you should schedule your annual flu shot given flu season is officially underway. Here’s what you need to know.

When should I get my flu shot?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the majority of people 6 months and older, who only need one dose for the season, should get their flu shots in either September or October.

The CDC advises that most people should not get their flu shots too early, such as in July and August. However, it does recommend that some groups, who need multiple doses, get their shots earlier in the season.

The ideal time, according to the CDC, is to get your flu shot before the end of October. But if you can’t get it before then, you can still be protected during peak flu season.

Where can I get a flu vaccine?

You can get vaccinated at your doctor’s office, urgent care clinic, county health departments or most pharmacies, such as CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid.
