Cross-bay ferry comes back big

After navigating serial setbacks, from Covid-19 to bureaucratic delays, Poseidon Ferry is back in service. 

The waterborne commuter service’s relaunch Monday went without a hitch, said CEO Johnathan Silvia, carrying a mix of 69 commuters and other passengers across Biscayne Bay between Miami and Miami Beach/South Beach all day – a far cry from the Poseidon’s maiden voyage in November 2020, when passengers could be counted on one hand, with fingers to spare.

“More and more reservations are coming in,” Mr. Silvia said. “I’m over the moon.”

A Grand Opening event is in the works for Aug. 31, with speeches by local dignitaries, refreshments and free rides all day long. Details of the event are to be announced at poseidonferry.com.

During the company’s recent enforced hiatus, Mr. Silvia said, the 65-foot 2012 Scarano catamaran ferry got a thorough overhaul. Its re-powered engine system now travels at 22 knots, completing each cross-bay transit in about 16 minutes. Its bottom was washed clean, and the AC revamped to keep the interior colder.

The commuter fare is $3 each way. Through a partnership with Velocia, a free mobility rewards app available on iPhone and Android phones, ferry commuters are also eligible to earn free travel rewards. (Details: www.velocia.io) One-way fares for other riders range from $2 to $10; children 12 and under ride free.

On the Miami side, the ferry departs from James L. Knight Convention Center/Hyatt Regency hotel, 400 Second Ave., every hour on the half-hour from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. weekends.

On the Miami Beach side, it sets out from the south side of the Bentley Bay Marina, 520 West Ave., hourly from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the weekend.

While current industry guidelines provided by the Passenger Vessel Association in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not mandate masks and social distancing, Mr. Silvia said his company urges that all passengers be vaccinated and follow CDC protocols for limiting the effects of coronavirus.
